The situation atop the Belgian League is closer than ever after Telenet Oostende bested Belgacom Spirou 81-70 in their showdown Sunday. That result combined with Generali Okapi Aalstar’s 100-73 demolition of Belgacom Liege Basket leaves Spirou and Aalstar tied for first place with 11-5 records and Oostende one win behind. Kennedy Winston scored 18 points and Dusan Djordjevic added 14 to pace Oostende, which dominated the middle two quarters 50-33. The hosts were strong on defense and held Spirou below its average shooting numbers, including a paltry 2 of 15 (13.3%) from downtown. Chris Hill scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Andrew Wisniewski was also good for 15 points in defeat. Chris Copeland scored 18 and Anton Gaddefors and Stedon Jackson had 17 each in Aalstar’s big win. Meanwhile Stella Artois Leuven Bears crushed VOO Verviers-Pepinster -52-70 thanks to 13 points from Ian Hanavan and Stella Artois Leuven Bears edged Dexia Mons-Hainaut 75-74 as John Tofi paced six Bears scorers in double figures with 16 points.
