Greek Cup, eighthfinals: October 12, 2011
Kavala earned a berth at the Greek Cup semifinals for the first time ever, joining Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and PAOK who advanced easily in Tuesday's and Wednesday's games. The Greens coasted at OAKA, thrashing Maroussi 93-61, behind 18 points from Ian Vougioukas and a double-double from Aleks Maric – 15 points and 13 boards. Olympiacos overwhelmed Aris 59-80 in Thessaloniki as Kostas Papanikolaou recorded 20 points and Vassilis Spanoulis added 14. At Pylaia PAOK defeated Ikaros Neas Smyrnis 74-58, with Dimos Dikoudis posting 24 points and JR Giddens hitting 20. Kavala edged past Ilissiakos 77-76, thanks to Sotiris Karapostolou, who bagged 14 points, including the winning shot at the buzzer. Panathinaikos takes on Kavala and Olympiacos hosts PAOK in one-game semifinals scheduled for February 19.
The 2011 Euroleague champions Panathinaikos registered a comfortable win over Maroussi, 93-61, which played without three key players. Along with Vougioukas and Maric, Pat Calathes also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Greens also got 11 points from David Logan and 10 from Nick Calathes. For Maroussi, Giannis Gagaloudis was best in defeat with 20 points and Dimitris Charitopoulos tallied 13. Back-to-back Greek Cup winner Olympiacos handily beat Aris, 59-80, dominating throughout. The Yellows tried to claw back in, cutting the gap to six, 42-48, but Vassilis Spanoulis answered for 42-50 and the Reds never looked back. Former Aris player Kostas Papanikolaou led Olympiacos with 20 points, Spanoulis added 14 points and Pero Antic another 10. For Aris, Adrian Oliver chipped in 16 points, while Dimitris Verginis and Dan Mavraides scored nine apiece.
Dimos Dikoudis netted 24 points, including two three-pointers to lead PAOK to an easy home win, 89-67, over Ikaros Kallitheas. JR Giddens delivered 20 points and eight boards, Marcus Goree posted 15 and Rashad Wright added 11. For Ikaros, Ravern Johnson finished with 16 points while Vangelis Karaboulas, Lazaros Agadakos and Marko Ljubisic had 10 points each.
In a thrilling game in Kavala, the host team beat Ilissiakos 77-76, as Karapostolou hit a two-point shot at the buzzer. The visitors had a five-point lead, 65-70, with three minutes to go, but Kavala upped its game when it counted most, reaching the semifinals for the first time. Karapostolou scored 14 points for the hosts, Drago Pasalic and Mike Taylor netted 13 apiece and Vassilis Simtsak had 11. For Ilissiakos, Miroslav Todic posted 23 points, Kyle Johnson hit 14 and DJ Thompson added 13.
