Greek League, Regular Season, Game 1: October 22-24

The Greek League regular season began over the weekend after a week's delay related to negotiations over a new television contract. There were no surprises in Week 1 as all the favorites won, including Turkish Airlines Euroleague participants Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, who beat the Greece’s representatives in the Eurocup Aris and PAOK, respectively. The defending champion Greens downed Aris BSA 2003 at home by 84-72 as Romain Sato and Ian Vougioukas netted 13 points apiece. On Monday Olympiacos bested PAOK 52-65 on the road behind 18 points and 6 assists from Vassilis Spanoulis.In the most exciting game of the opening week, Ilissiakos overcame a 59-65 deficit with 49 second to go to edge Kavala 68-67 behind veteran guard Nikos Chatzis. In other games, Kolossos Rhodes topped Panionios 72-67 as Robyn Boykin posted 20 points, Rethimno beat Ikaros Kallitheas 76-63 thanks to Dionte Christmas’s 18 points and Peristeri bested Drama 73-65 behind 22 points from Richard Roby.

At OAKA, Panathinaikos registered its 20th straight home win over Aris 84-72. The visitors took an early 10-13 lead, but the Greens reacted immediately and soared to 37-22 late in the second quarter to take control. Romain Sato and Ian Vougioukas bagged 13 points each, David Logan scored 11 and Aleks Maric added 9 points and 5 boards. For Aris, Christos Tapoutos recorded 12 points and 5 boards, Matej Krusic tallied 11 points and 5 boards and Dimitris Verginis scored 11 points. Olympiacos beat PAOK in Thessaloniki 52-65. The hosts took a 25-16 lead in the second quarter, but the visitors came up big with a 14-0 run. Vassilis Spanoulis was the man of the match with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists, Kyle Hines recorded 16 points and 7 boards and Giorgos Printezis added 8 points. Marcus Goree 11 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for PAOK which also saw Dante Stiggers and Dimos Dikoudis score 11 points apiece.
