Israeli League, Regular Season, Game 12: January 1-2, 2012
The second go-through of the Israeli League regular season began Sunday night with Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv collecting another win, 102-61 over Gilboa/Galil at Nokia Arena. The result opened a three-win gap between Maccabi and second place, which is still occupied by Galil. In a rematch from last season’s title game, Maccabi won by 40 points or more for the second week in a row. Richard Hendrix paced the champs with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, Shawn James added 17 points, Guy Pnini scored 16, Lior Eliyahu 15 and Jon Scheyer 11. Chaisson Allen and Romeo Travis scored 13 points each for Galil, which dropped to 7-4. After six minutes of game time it was still just a 16-14 lead for Maccabi, but Hendrix and Pnini led a 7-0 run and when Scheyer connected twice from behind the arc in the second quarter it became a double-digit lead, 34-21. Maccabi went on to score 33 points in the second quarter and finish the first half with a 58-35 lead. Eliyahu and James led the way on both ends of the floor in the second half as the gap increased as the minutes passed. The guests were limited to only 2 points in the last five minutes, which helped Maccabi reach the 40-point gap. In other games, BC Habikaa picked up its first road win of the season with a 76-78 victory over Bazan Haifa, which lost for the fourth time in a row. Frank Robinson, who played for Haifa last season, hit the winning shot with 4 seconds on the game clock to give his team the precious win. Eldan Ashkelon edged Maccabi Ashdod 87-85 behind Dwayne Mitchell’s 25 points and 6 assists. And Maccabi Rishon Lezion outscored Hapoel Holon 88-77 behind 35 points and 9 boards by Darwin Kitchen.
