Italian League, Regular Season, Game 1: October 8-9, 2011
Italy’s three Turkish Airlines Euroleague teams all rolled to wins on the opening weekend of Italian League action. Montepaschi Siena was a 67-75 road winner at Banca Tercas Teramo on Saturday and Bennet Cantu and EA7 Emporio Armani Milano each picked up double-digit margin wins on Sunday. Defending champion Montepaschi trailed 51-47 late in the third quarter, but used a 0-8 push to take the lead for good and back-to-back Pietro Aradori triples early in the fourth helped secure a comfortable lead en route to the win. Aradori paced Siena with 15 points, while Bo McCalebb and Rimas Kaukenas added 14 each and David Andersen tacked on 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cantu held Vanoli-Braga Cremona to 8 first-quarter points in establishing a double-digit advantage and never looked back en route to a 60-72 win. Maarten Leunen led the attack with 15 points, Nicolas Mazzarino scored 14 and Vladimir Micov and Andrea Cinciarini had 12 each for the winning side. Daniele Cinciarini scored 13 for Cremona. Milano put the moves on Cimberio Varese with a 14-0 run to open the second half on the way to an 89-75 win. Drew Nicholas led six Milano scorers in double figures with 16 points and Danilo Gallinari and Malik Hairston added 12 apiece. Yakhouba Diawara had 26 for Varese in defeat. A pair of Weyinmi Efejuku Rose free throws in the closing seconds gave Pepsi Caserta an 85-84 win over Benetton Treviso. Andre Smith led Caserta with 24 points. Sani Becirovic scored 20 while Jeff Adrien and Brian Scalabrine had 18 and 16, respectively, in their Italian League debuts. Rounding out the list of winners over the weekend in Italy were Banco di Sardegna Sassari, Angelico Biella, Fabi Shoes Montegranaro and Canadian Solar Bologna.
