Italian League, Regular Season, Game 6: November 12-13, 2011
Danilo Gallinari - EA7 Emporio Armani_34885Entering Game 6 in the Italian League, there was a four-way tie for first place and six teams with just one loss. By its end, EA7 Emporio Armani Milano boasts sole possession of first place and – with a 5-1 record – is the only team with less than two defeats. Armani rose to the top by downing defending champion Montepaschi Siena 63-56 on Sunday, while Sidigas Avellino was torched by Bennet Cantu and Cimberio Varese also lost. Those results leave a five-way tie for second place at 4-2 among Siena, Cantu, Avellino, Varese and Angelico Biela. Danilo Gallinari scored 15 points off the bench and Stefano Mancinelli added 14 to lead Milan, which outscored Montepaschi in each period. The game featured five ties and four lead changes in the fourth quarter alone, but after David Andersen gave the visitors a 55-56 lead with two minutes remaining, Gallinari scored from the line on the next two possessions and Malik Hairston added another 2 as part of an 8-0 Milano finish to book the win. Bo McCalebb paced Montepaschi with 16 points and Andersen netted 13. Cantu crushed Avellino in a one-sided affair 90-55 led by David Lighty and Nicolas Mazzarino with 15 points apiece. Cantu simply dominated as Giorgi Shermadini (11 rebounds) and Maarty Leunen (10 rebounds) contributed to a 48-29 rebounding advantage and the team made 10 of 19 three-pointers (52.6%). Canadian Solar Bologna took care of Varese 74-63 as Giuseppe Poeta netted 17. Benetton Basket edged Novipiu Casale Monferrato on a Massimo Bulleri free throw with 11 seconds left. It was another thriller that had four ties and five lead changes in the last five minutes. Alessandro Gentile scored 19 points to lead the winners, though he lost the personal battle against his brother Stefano, who had 23 points for Casale. Jeff Adrien added 15 points and 13 rebounds for Benetton.
