Italian League, Regular Season, Game 16: January 11, 2012
Sani Becirovic - Benetton BasketIn a rare occurrence, the three Euroleague teams in Italy all lost on Wednesday. Canadian Solar Bologna moved into a tie for second place by beating leader and defending champ Montepaschi Siena. EA7 Emporio Armani Milan failed to take advantage when it fell in the closing seconds at home to Benetton Treviso. And Bennet Cantu dropped into a tie for fourth with a loss at Fabi Shoes Montegranaro. Giuseppe Poeta recorded 13 points and 6 assists and Viktor Sanikidze had 10 points and 19 rebounds as Bologna held off Montepaschi 75-71. A 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter gave Bologna a 64-50 advantage. David Andersen and Bo McCalebb helped lead Siena back and Igor Rakocevic twice made it a 4-point game, but Bologna did not let Siena any closer than that. The result dropped Siena to 11-4 and lifted Bologna to 10-5, which ties it for second place with Milan. Sani Becirovic scored the last 4 points of the game to steal the win for Benetton, 80-81. Omar Cook free throws put Milan up 80-77 in the final minute. After Becirovic made a pair of free throws, Drew Nicholas came up empty at the line with 15 seconds left for the hosts, Ben Ortner was first to the rebound and Becirovic raced downcourt to put Treviso ahead with 6 seconds left. After a timeout, Alessandro Gentile, who left Benetton for Armani last month, missed at the buzzer. Ortner finished with 13 points for the victors; Gentile and Stefano Mancinelli combined for 28 points and 19 rebounds to lead Milan. Montegranaro spanked Cantu 89-73 by dominating the middle two quarters 56-35. Ivan Zoroski scored 22 and Dejan Ivanov 15 for the winners. Nicolas Mazzarino led Cantu with 19 points and Giorgi Shermadini posted 15 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. Victories for Umana Venezia and Scavolini Siviglia Pesaro brought those teams into a tie for fourth place with Cantu at 9-6.
