Italian Cup quarterfinals, Day 1: February 16, 2012
Turkish Airlines Euroleague sides Montepaschi Siena and EA7 Emporio Armani Milan punched their tickets to the Italian Cup semifinals with respective wins Thursday in Torino. Montepaschi bested Banco di Sardegna Sassari 70-60, while Milan ousted Canadian Solar Bologna 82-77. Six Montepaschi players scored in a 16-0 first-quarter run that helped Siena take a 22-12 lead after one quarter and it never looked back. David Moss finished with 16 points for the winners, Bo McCalebb added 15, David Andersen posted 13 points and 9 rebounds and Pietro Aradori netted 10. Quinton Hosley paced Sassari with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Milan dominated early and led 31-14 after 10 minutes, but Bologna battled back to within 11 at halftime and then Petteri Koponen scored half the points in a 0-12 run that gave Bologna a 55-57 lead late in the third quarter. Back-to-back threes by Nicolo Meli and Malik Hairston and a third from Drew Nicholas helped Milan to a 64-58 edge at the end of the quarter. Chris Douglas-Roberts made it a 1-point game midway through the fourth quarter and Viktor Sanikidze and Koponen had Bologna within 2 in the final minute, but an Antonis Fotsis triple sealed the win. Ioannis Bourousis led Milan with 14 points and 8 rebounds, Fotsis and JR Bremer scored 12 apiece, Meli had 11 in 13 minutes and Omar Cook 10. Bremer and Cook also dished 5 assists apiece. Koponen led Bologna with 23 points and 8 assists.
