Italian League semifinals, Game 3: June 1-2, 2012
Montepaschi Siena became the first team to reach the Italian League finals by beating Banco di Sardegna Sassari 64-79 to sweep the best-of-five semifinals series on Friday. On Saturday, Scavolini Siviglia Pesaro avoided a sweep and forced a Game 4 in its series with EA7 Emporio Armani Milano by winning at home 85-77. Defending champion Montepaschi Siena started strong and led 12-23 at the end of the first quarter and then increased the margin to 28-44 at halftime. Back-to-back baskets from Bo McCalebb extended the cushion to 31-55 at the midway point of the third quarter. The home team reacted by climbing within 62-71 late in the last quarter, but Rimas Kaukenas scored 4 points to reestablish a double-digit margin. McCalebb led the winners with 21 points on 9-of-10 two-point shooting, Ksistof Lavrinovic added 12 and Kaukenas 10. Tony Easley amassed a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for Sassari, Quinton Hosley scored 13 and Drake Diener 10. In Pesaro, a Tautvydas Lydeka slam gave a 14-10 margin to the hosts, but a 2-11 Milano run and capped by Antonis Fotsis made it 16-21 for the visitors after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Omar Cook extended the difference to 16-24, but Pesaro rallied and took the lead at 36-35 from a three-point-play completed by Jumaine Jones. James White from the foul line completed a 10-0 run to make it 41-35. JR Bremer free throws made it 41-37 at halftime. Five points in a row by Jones gave the first double-digit margin to Scavolini, 48-37, early in the third quarter. Daniele Cavaliero extended it to 59-42 from downtown late in the quarter. Richie Hickman scored for 63-44 before Nicolo Melli fixed it at 65-49 after three quarters. Jacopo Gichetti tried to sound the charge for Milano, but Jones scored a deep three to stay up 74-59 with four minutes left.
