Italian League finals, Game 1: June 9, 2012
Montepaschi Siena opened the best-of-seven Italian League finals in style on Saturday, downing EA7 Emporio Armani Milano by 86-77 at home in Palaestra of Siena. All-Euroleague second-team guard Bo McCalebb was dominant for the winners, amassing 25 points, 5 assists and a performance index rating of 33. Bootsy Thornton added 19 points, David Andersen 17, and Ksistof Lavrinovic 11 for Siena. Malik Hairston posted 15 points for Milano, while Alessandro Gentile added 14, Leon Radosevic and J.R. Bremer 10 each. Omar Cook gave Milano an early 2-7 early margin, but Siena didn't wait long to blast off on a 22-5 run that McCalebb finished by putting the hosts ahead 24-12. Stefano Mancinelli drilled a triple to finish the first quarter by getting Milano back to within single digits, 26-17. Milano kept responding early in the second quarter, extending its run to 6-17 to get within 30-29 as Bremer and Mancinelli led the charge. But then 4 consecutive points from McCalebb, this year's Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy winner, extended Siena's margin to 47-38 late in the quarter. A huge dunk from McCalebb and a three-pointer of Cook to beat the half-time buzzer closed the gap again to 51-43. Siena roared back after the break until a shot from downtown by Andersen extended the difference to 64-46. It was everything Milano could do to trim the difference to 71-58 at the end of the third quarter on an alley-oop dunk by Nicolo Melli. Milano kept cutting the difference until Bremer struck from beyond the arc to make it 75-70 at the midway point of the final quarter. Soon, however, Bootsy Thornton beat the 24-second shot-clock buzzer with a basket at 82-73 before McCalebb stole and dunkedto seal Siena's victory. Montepaschi is trying to become the first team in the 63-year history of the Italian first division to win the title for a sixth consecutive season.
