Italian League finals, Game 3: June 13, 2012
Ksistof Lavrinovic - Montepaschi SienaMontepaschi Siena moved within a game of repeating as Italian league champions after edging EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 79-82 in the fashion capital on Wednesday night. The game featured an exciting fourth quarter with eight lead changes, six ties and free throws providing all the drama in the final minute. But the visitors stood tall by making most of their shots from the charity stripe – and grabbing the most important rebound when they didn’t – to earn the win and a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Ksistof Lavrinovic paced Siena with 17 points, Rimantas Kaukenas added 15, Shaun Stonerook 13 and David Andersen 11. Malik Hairston starred for Milan with 25 points, Alessandro Gentile tallied 13 points and 5 assists and Omar Cook contributed 12 points and 5 assists in defeat. The game was even in the early stages with the hosts grabbing a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes. Nicolo Melli tied the score at 22-22 three minutes into the second quarter, but Siena responded with a big push. Kaukenas hit back-to-back three-pointers and Stonerook added another to cap a 0-11 run. Hairston got the hosts within 6, however baskets by Andersen and Bo McCalebb left Montepaschi with a 29-39 halftime lead. A basket-plus-foul by Antonis Fotsis to open the third quarter showed that Armani was not going down without a fight. Leon Radosevic narrowed the gap to 38-42 only to see Bootsy Thornton’s second triple of the quarter restore a 40-49 Montepaschi lead. However Armani scored the next 7 points and eventually got within 1 a number of times. A Cook triple left the scoreboard at 55-56 through three quarters. Milan kept challenging and tied it at 58-58 on a Gentile three-pointer and eventually took its first lead, 65-63, on a Radosevic bucket midway through the fourth. That set up a thrilling finish with the lead swinging back and forth sometimes from possession to possession. A Stonerook triple with just over a minute to go put the visitors up 73-75. The game became a free throw shooting contest in the end. Stonerook opened the door for the hosts when he missed twice at 79-80 and seconds to go, but McCalebb rescued Siena with an offensive rebound and Lavrinovic sank 2 to seal the win.
