Russian League, Regular Season, Game 20: April 22-24, 2012
The Russian League regular season came to a close with perennial champion CSKA Moscow holding off chief rival and Eurocup champ BC Khimki Moscow Region 91-72 to claim first place and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. CSKA improved to 17-1 and will face Lokomotiv Kuban in the semifinals, while Khimki, 15-3, gets BC Triumph. Andrei Kirilenko and Alexey Shved scored all the points in an 11-0 first-quarter run that put CSKA up by double figures and the visitors never recovered. Khimki closed within 22-16 after 10 minutes, but the lead grew to 50-37 by halftime and CSKA coasted the rest of the way by outscoring Khimki in all four quarters. Shved paced the winners with 15 points, Viktor Khryapa added 14 and 7 assists, Kirilenko netted 12 and Andrey Vorontsevich 10 as all 12 CSKA players scored. Thomas Kelati led Khimki with 12 points, Chris Quinn chipped in 11 and Vitali Fridzon 10. In Tuesday’s other games, both Unics Kazan and Spartak St. Petersburg won big, but neither was able to crack the semifinals matchups. Unics routed Lokomotiv Kuban 101-75 as Vladimir Veremeenko posted 23 points on perfect shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds and Terrell Lyday amassed 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Spartak SPB downed Enisey 63-84 on the road as Patrick Beverley and Vasily Zavoruev scored 16 apiece.
