Spanish League, Regular Season, Game 6: November 5-6, 2011
A trio of Turkish Airlines Euroleague powers remained tied for first place with a surprising fourth team in the Spanish League following solid, double-digit home victories over the weekend. Unicaja owned the middle quarters of a 78-51 win over visiting Valladolid as big men Luka Zoric and Nedzad Sinanovic combined for 29 points and 19 rebounds. Barcelona defeated local rival Joventut 82-70 as Boni Ndong exploded for a double-double of 20 points, 10 rebounds. Real Madrid rallied from a halftime deficit to stop visiting Cajasol 78-65 as Sergio Rodriguez put up 13 points and 7 assists. All three winners have 5-1 records, the same as Alicante, a narrow 58-55 winner against Eurocup team Gran Canaria 2014. Another Euroleague team, Caja Laboral, is tied behind the leaders after blasting Blusens Monbus 72-53 as Mirza Teletovic had 14 points, 11 rebounds. Eurocup team Valencia Basket won 80-86 on the road at Lagun Aro thanks to 28 points from Nando De Colo to stay even at 4-2 with Caja Laboral and Manresa, which defeated Bizkaia Bilbao 81-73 despite 15 points and 11 rebounds from Dimitris Mavroeidis for the visitors. Other scores included Estudiantes topping Zaragoza 67-63 and Murcia defeating Fuenlabrada 71-65.
At home in Malaga, a massive 52-22 run through the third and fourth quarters vaulted Unicaja past Valladolid after the two had been tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter. While Zoric and Sinanovic were dominating inside, with 17 and 12 points, respectively, in limited minutes, the guard tandem of Berni Rodriguez and Kristaps Valters added 13 and 12 points. Unicaja's defense did the rest, limiting Valladolid to one double-digit scorer, Herve Toure, with 15 points. In Barcelona, the hosts were in control until Joventut suddenly took a 41-43 lead soon after halftime. Barcelona responded with a 15-0 run with dunks by Ndong and Chuck Eidson, triples by Erazem Lorbek and Juan Carlos Navarro, to go ahead for good. Ndong's double-double was made even better by 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Eidson added 15 points, Lorbek 13 and Marcelinho Huertas 11 points, 8 assists for the winners. Real Madrid trailed 31-36 at halftime before righting its ship and defeating Cajasol. A 10-2 run after the break and 9 points in the fourth quarter by Nikola Mirotic helped Madrid avoid an upset. Martynas Pocius led the winners with 15 points, while Mirotic finished with 14 and Rudy Fernandez 12. Caja Laboral completed four wins by Euroleague teams by never letting Blusens threaten its early leads. To Teletovic's double-double, Brad Oleson added 14 points, while Fernando San Emeterio and Miljko Bjelica chipped in 9 points each. The only Euroleague loser, Bizkaia Bilbao, suffered from a 29-9 deficit after one quarter in Manresa and could not recover.
Valencia rode De Colo's big show off the bench to a key road win in San Sebastian. De Colo finished with 28 points and 9 rebounds, making 3 of 3 triples and 9 of 10 free throws. Rafa Martinez was right behind with 21 points, while Nik Caner-Medley had 16. Gran Canaria lost on the road to the Spanish League's surprise co-leader, Alicante, after a tight defensive battle. A 9-0 start put Gran Canaria on its heels, and although the visitors got within 49-48 in the fourth quarter, they never led despite getting 14 points from Marquez Haynes and 10 from Juan Palacios.
