Spanish League, Regular Season, Game 19: February 4-5, 2012
FC Barcelona Regal claimed sole possession of first place in the Spanish league with an away victory over Asefa Estudiantes 65-80 while co-leader Real Madrid stumbled against Gescrap Bizkaia, which eked out a tough 90-93 victory on the road. Barcelona outscored Asefa 27-48 in the first and fourth quarters to secure a 16-3 record as Juan Carlos Navarro and Chuck Eidson each netted 15 points, Boniface Ndong had 11 and Marcelino Huertas added 10 to pace the winners. Chris Lofton led Asefa with 17 points. Gescrap handed Real Madrid its first regular season home loss in 20 months as Aaron Jackson poured in 21 points, including 3 of 4 from downtown, and dished out 7 assists, and D’or Fischer contributed 19 along with 10 rebounds. The winners also got 15 points from Kostas Vasiliadis and 12 from Marko Banic. Sergio Llull led the losers with 18 points, burying 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Ante Tomic knocked down 16 and Marty Pocius and Jaycee Carroll each had 12. The game, which had numerous lead changes in the second half, saw Madrid out front 71-65 with little over 6 minutes on the clock, but Jackson and Fischer helped tie the game at 71-71 and then the Gescrap outfough Madrid the rest of the way. Madrid’s record slipped to 15-4 while Gescrap joined three other teams with a 10-9 record. Caja Laboral held onto third placed with a narrow 71-67 victory at home over Gran Canaria, raising its record to 14-5. Mirza Teletovic led the winners with 20 points and 9 rebounds, Milko Bjelica contributed 17 and Fernando San Emeterio added 13. Marquez Haynes netted 20 points for the visitors in a losing effort. The hosts clinched the game with very efficient two-point shooting, hitting 21 of 29 attempts. Lucentum Alicante kept pace at the top of the board, taking a 13-6 record after upending Banca Civica at home 86-82 behind five players in double figures, led by Kaloyan Ivanov’s double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Blusens Monbus handily defeated Unicaja on the road 54-69, using a 5-21 second quarter to put the hosts in a hole. Unicaja cut the lead in the third but Blusens came out on top in the fourth to secure the win, led by Alberto Corbacho’s 17 points. Stephane Lasme grabbed 11 rebounds and Milt Palacio contributed 10 assists for the winners. Unicaja’s Joel Freeland was high scorer with 12 points, while four players added 9 apiece. With the loss Unicaja slipped to 12-7. CAI Zaragoza outscored Valencia Basket 23-9 in the fourth quarter to take a 71-63 victory at home, as Rafael Hettsheimeir led the winners with 17 points and Bracey Wright added 15. Valencia was paced by Nando De Colo’s 15 points and Nik Caner-Medley’s 14. In other games, Assigna Manresa took out Baloncesto Fuenlabrada 80-59; UCAM Murcia battered FIATC Mutua Joventut 76-54 and Lagun Aro defeated Blancos de Rueda Valladolid 71-62.
