Spanish League, Regular Season, Game 28: April 7-9, 2012
FC Barcelona Regal’s lead grew atop the Spanish League standings to two wins, while third placed Caja Laboral closed within two of Real Madrid with a 67-66 win in a thriller between the two. Barcelona had its fierce defense on display in a 49-68 road win at CAI Zaragoza. Barca did not allow more than 14 points in any quarter and limited the hosts to 2-for-17 shooting (11.8%) from downtown and 14 of 41 (34.1%) within the arc. Boni Ndong paced the Barcelona attack with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting plus 9 rebounds. Erazem Lorbek added 9 points, Xavi Rabaseda 8 and Marcelinho Huertas tallied 5 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists as head coach Xavi Pascual’s men improved to 23-5. Laboral beat Madrid on an Andres Nocioni bucket and defense that denied Sergio Llull twice in the closing seconds. Nocioni scored the game’s final points with less than two minutes remaining and the defenses prevailed the rest of the way. Nocioni finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds and Maciej Lampe and Nemanja Bjelica added 10 points apiece for Laboral. Sergio Llull finished with 16 points and Kyle Singler and Nikola Mirotic added 11 each in defeat. Wins for Valencia Basket and Gescrap BB saw those two move into a three-way tie with Lagun Aro GBC for fourth place with 16-12 records. Valencia routed FIATC Joventut 90-67 after taking a double-digit lead in the opening quarter. Nando De Colo paced six Valencia scorers in double figures with 15 points and 4 assists, Nik Caner-Medley added 13 points and 8 rebounds and Serhiy Lishchuck contributed 11 and 7. Pooh Jeter netted 17 for Joventut in defeat. Gescrap got the best of Blusens Monbus 79-71 as Kostas Vasiliadis came through with 20 points, D’Or Fischer amassed 16 points and 11 rebounds and Alex Mumbri flirted with a triple-double by posting 9 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Bilbao dominated early and led 27-7 after 10 minutes before Blusens rallied to tie it after three quarters. Gescrap reasserted itself in the fourth quarter to snatch the win. UCAM Murcia handed Lagun Aro a 67-71 victory behind 19 points and 5 assists from Ime Udoka. Unicaja’s playoffs hopes suffered a blow with an 81-96 home defeat at the hands of Assignia Manresa. Adam Hanga paced the winners with 21 points in as many minutes; Luka Zoric’s 24 points on 11-of-12 shooting were not enough for Unicaja. In another result of note, Banca Civica improved its playoffs chances with a 66-74 road win at Gran Canaria.
