Spanish League, Regular Season, Game 32: April 29, 2012
FC Barcelona Regal held onto first place in the Spanish League with a 27-5 record after it posted a decisive 57-83 road victory over Lucentum Alicante, while second-placed Real Madrid barely escaped against UCAM Murcia, taking an 80-79 win and climbing to 25-7. But FIATC Mutua Joventut upended third-ranked Caja Laboral 66-68, dropping the losers to 21-11, effectively turning the league into a two-team race. Barcelona nailed 9 three-pointers in the first half to grab a 24-41 halftime lead on the way to an easy 57-83 win. Barcelona gave Alicante a drubbing in all phases of the game, including a 33-17 difference in rebounds. Chuck Eidson and Pete Mickeal scored a team-leading 13 points apiece, while Fran Vazquez had 11 and Boniface Ndong added 10. Eidson also dished out 7 assists. Madrid seemed in control against Murcia, going up 51-43 lead in the middle of the third quarter, its biggest of the game, but the visitors outscored Madrid 18-25 in the fourth quarter to nearly pull off the upset. Sergio Llull paced the winners with 16 points, while Nikola Mirotic netted 15 and Carlos Suarez added 11. An uninspired Caja Laboral trailed 31-36 at the half against Joventut, then awakened to cut the deficit to 53-55 at the end of 30 minutes. But Joventut took the initiative again until the final 3 minutes, when the hosts dug deep, holding the visitors scoreless over four possessions to tie the game at 66-66 with 13 seconds to go. Joventut’s Federico Van Lacke pushed the score to 66-68 with a pair of free throws, leaving Caja Laboral 10 seconds for a final shot -- a three-pointer by Thomas Heurtel that banged off the rim. Latavious Williams led the winners with 12 points, while Eulis Baez tallied 10 and David Jelinek 9. Mirza Teletovic netted 16 with 8 rebounds while Maciej Lampe added 13 points and Milko Bjelica and Andres Nocioni had 9 apiece in a losing effort. Gescrap eked out a dramatic 76-77 victory over Lagun Aro after seeming to have the game in hand by the middle of the second quarter 23-33. Led by Andy Panko, who starred for the hosts with 28 points, Lagun Aro managed to take a 63-62 lead in the fourth quarter, then extended the lead to 5 points with only a minute left. But a triple and foul shot by Alex Mumbru cut the lead to 72-71, and Gescrap won the subsequent battle of free throws to grab the win. Konstantinos Vasileiadis led the winners with 20 points, while Mumbru tallied 18 and Marko Banic had 14. Valencia Basket led throughout against Gran Canaria 2014, finishing with a 77-62 victory as Victor Claver came up big with 20 points, including 4 of 4 from downtown, Vitor Faverani netted 14 and Nando De Colo added 10. Gescrap and Valencia are tied for fourth with 19-13 records. In other games, CAI Zaragoza upended Banca Civica 65-59, Assignia Manresa outfought Asefa Estudiantes 78-75 and Blancos de Rueda Valladolid downed Blusens Monbus 81-75.
