Spanish League, Regular Season, Game 34: May 6, 2012
The top three teams in the Spanish League finished the regular season with victories as FC Barcelona Regal took care of Assignia Manresa 71-77; second-ranked Real Madrid outplayed FIATC Mutua Joventut 95-82 and Caja Laboral dumped Gescrap 100-70 to finish in third. Valencia Basket took advantage of Gescrap’s loss to take sole possession of fourth place after it handily defeated Blancos de Rueda Valladolid 76-59. A focused Barcelona team charged out to an 18-32 lead after the first quarter, but Manresa chipped away at the deficit to get as close as 59-61 with 6:14 on the clock. But Pete Mickael answered with two straight triples, snuffing out the comeback. Boniface Ndong paced the winners with 17 points, while Chuck Eidson netted 12, including 4 of 9 from downtown, and Mickeal added 11. Barcelona ended the season with a 29-5 record and will face off against Lucentum Alicante in a best-of-five quarterfinals contest. Madrid piled on points in the first half, sprinting out to a 55-38 lead then coasting the rest of the way. Jaycee Carroll got things started for the Whites in the opening quarter, nailing three triples in a row on the way to a team-high 20 points, while Sergio Rodriguez tallied 16 and Nikola Mirotic 11. Real Madrid closed the regular season 26-8 and will square off against Banca Civica in the quarterfinals. In a matchup of Basque sides, Caja Laboral rolled over a listless Gescrap 100-70, jumping out to a 32-16 lead and never looking back. The hosts had four players in double figures, led by Maciej Lampe’s 20 points and Nemanja Bjelica’s 17 with 9 rebounds. Pablo Prigioni dished out 7 assists for the winners. Raul Lopez scored 17 points and Konstantinos Vasileidadis added 16 in a losing effort. Caja Laboral, 23-11 on the season, will meet Gescrap, 19-15, in the quarterfinals. Valencia bested Valladolid 76-59 in a closely fought contest until the fourth quarter, when the hosts outscored the opponent 22-7 to secure the win. Nando De Colo and Florent Pietrus paced the winners with 15 points apiece, and Victor Claver added 14. De Colo also pulled down a team-leading 8 rebounds. Valencia, which finished up at 20-14, will take on the season’s Cinderella story, Lagun Aro, in the first round of the playoffs. Alicante locked down the eighth and final playoffs spot by tripping up Mad-Croc Fuenlabrada 66-55 behind Pedro Llompart’s 19 points. Lagun Aro finished in fifth position, tied with Gescrap, after it pummeled Gran Canaria 2014 93-78. Unicaja downed Banca Civica 75-66, but failed to make the final cut for the playoffs after advancing to the quarterfinals 13 seasons in a row, finishing one game behind Alicante. However, the Malaga side preserved its spot in the Euroleague next season. Unicaja won all quarters save one, outshooting the opponent from two- and three-point range. Joel Freeland led the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Kristaps Valters had 11 points and Troy DeVries and Berni Rodriguez added 10 apiece. Banca Civica ended the season in seventh position with an 18-16 record. In other games, Blusens Monbus upended CAI Zaragoza 89-84 and UCAM Murcia beat Asefa Estudiantes 80-86, relegating the losers to the second division along with Valladolid.
