Spanish League finals, Game 3: June 11, 2012
Real Madrid moved within one win of its first Spanish League championship in five years by pounding defending champ FC Barcelona Regal 85-59 to a take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five finals. Madrid will get a chance to win the crown at home in the Community of Madrid Sports Palace in Game 4 on Wednesday. Madrid outscored Barcelona 44-19 in the middle two quarters and outrebounded the visitors 48-23 to chalk up the win. Jaycee Carroll paced the Madrid attack with 17 points, Felipe Reyes tallied 15 points and 8 rebounds in 14 minutes, Sergio Llull and Nikola Mirotic scored 12 each and Sergio Rodriguez ran the show with 9 assists. C.J. Wallace paced Barcelona with 13 points in defeat. The game was close early with neither team leading by more than 4 points in the first quarter, which finished at 25-23. After Marcelinho Huertas tied the game with the first basket of the second quarter, Madrid reeled off 12 straight points – half of them from Reyes – to take control. Reyes stretched the lead to 41-26 before a Juan Carlos Navarro three-pointer gave Barcelona help. Still the halftime score left Madrid with a comfortable 46-32 lead. Madrid picked up where it left off by limiting the visitors to 2 points in the first six-plus minutes of the third quarter. Ante Tomic lifted the hosts’ lead to 20 and as Barcelona continued to struggle, Reyes and Carroll ran the score up. Mirotic made it a 30-point game before a Wallace three made it 69-42 through three quarters. The lead peaked at 76-45 on a Mirotic bucket en route to an emphatic Madrid victory.
