Spanish League finals, Game 5: June 19, 2013
Felipe Reyes - Real Madrid (Photo: realmadrid.com)Real Madrid won the Spanish League championship for the 31st time and first time in six years after downing archrival FC Barcelona Regal 79-71 in the last game of the finals. Felipe Reyes, who had 14 points and 5 rebounds for the winners, was named series MVP. Rudy Fernandez scored 15 and Tremmell Darden 13 for Los Blancos, who used a 19-1 charge spanning halftime to move in front 50-33 and held off Barcelona’s best efforts the rest of the way. Joe Ingles paced Barca with 25 points and Sarunas Jasikevicius scored 23 in defeat. Madrid got off to an ideal start as Jaycee Carroll scored 6 in a 10-0 game-opening run. The hosts were coasting as Sergio Llull made it 20-10 before Barcelona turned to Jasikevicius. His introduction led to 8 straight Barca points – 6 from Saras and another 2 via his assist to Loukas Mavrokefalides – to bring the visitors within 20-18 through 10 minutes. Ante Tomic tied it with the first points of the second quarter, however Madrid quickly regained control and Sergio Rodriguez made it 26-20. Barca kept close and 5 quick Ingles points put the visitors in front 31-32. Los Blancos scored the last 10 points of the half – 4 of which came from Dontaye Draper – to head into the locker room up 41-32. Fernandez scored the first 4 points of the second half and soon followed with his first three-pointer of the series as Madrid capped a 19-1 charge to move in front 50-33. The duo of Jasikevicius and Ingles gave Barca hope; the latter buried a three to narrow the gap to 52-43. Ingles reached 20 points for the night with a bucket to trim the gap to 55-48 through three quarters. Although Madrid bumped the lead back to 13 early in the fourth quarter, Ingles and Saras refused to quit. Jasikevicius alone tallied 12 fourth-quarter points before Brad Oleson made it 76-71 with 25 seconds to play, but free throws by Rodriguez and Reyes wrapped up the game, series and championship for Madrid.
