Euroleague Basketball working group debate future system

In a working meeting held today in Vitoria 14 team and 3 league representatives from Euroleague Basketball“s General Assembly met to discuss the details of the proposal that Euroleague Basketball made in the last General Assembly meeting held in Berlin and approved by almost 80% of the members.

During this discussion Euroleague Basketball was able to clarify the organizational structure and the decision making powers of the competition as well as to present the future structure, highlighting that the final decisions are made by the participating clubs.

Euroleague Basketball was able to open the debate to teams and leagues represented in the meetings the ranking proposal and the criteria for team classifications for each licence. To elaborate the ranking criteria Euroleague Basketball took into account the standing agreement contract with FIBA Europe that allows Euroleague Basketball possibility to manage the licences allocated to teams in the top European competition.

The criteria for this ranking are based on sporting results starting from 2002-3 Euroleague season, television contracts, and arena attendances.

During this presentation Euroleague Basketball reiterated the importance of attaining stability for the clubs and the top competition so as to grow in the near future. With the new proposal Euroleague Basketball seeks to increase the arena capacity to a minimum of 10,000 spectators for those teams who hold a licence A contract, as well as encourage better television deals.

During the intervention Euroleague Basketball and the participating teams and leagues opened up the debate of including a qualifying round in the new proposal.

Finally Euroleague Basketball highlighted the importance of developing the relationship with the national league competitions. The company presented an outline of a plan so as to bring the basketball entities in further collaboration including standardising refereeing criteria, sharing know how in marketing and communications and arena management and construction to strengthen the sport of basketball across Europe.

These discussions, as well as a commercial proposal, will be further elaborated on in the next meeting that will be held in November.
