Prokom, Olympiacos team up in life-saving effort
|
In another example of devotion by Euroleague teams to helping others, Asseco Prokom Sopot and Olympiacos Piraeus teamed up before their last Top 16 game to donate money and raise awareness for a Polish ballerina and young mother in need of live-saving medical treatment. Izabela Sokolowska, a 24-year-old graduate of the Ballet School in Gdansk and a soloist for the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, has been diagnosed with a giant cell tumor on her lower spine. The best course of action is an experimental treatment at the Oncology Center in Tianjin, China, but neither Izabela nor her parents can afford this.
After learning of her ordeal, Asseco Prokom took up Izabela's cause and raise money for her at last Wednesday's game against Olympiacos. The club – as well as its players, coaches and support staff – donated money to help fund Izabela's treatment and then asked fans at the game to contribute, too. Then, after arriving in Poland for the game and learning of Izabela's ordeal, the players, coaches and support staff from Olympiacos also joined in with generous contributions. What's more, the official travel partner of the Olympiacos team, Esser Travel, committed to cover all travel costs from Poland to China and back for Izabela and a family member!
This project to save this young mother's life is another example of Euroleague clubs using basketball to better the lives of those around us.
