Euroleague teams help Special Olympics
Darjus Lavrinovic, Lynn Greer share torchA pair of Euroleague Basketball clubs have taken time from their preseason schedules to help promote the 2010 Special Olympics European Summer Games. Players from both Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul and Union Olimpija Ljubljana in Slovenia last week helped carry the torch that will light the Special Olympics flame when the Summer Games begin on September 18 in Warsaw, Poland. First, on Sunday in downtown Istanbul, Fenerbahce players Lynn Greer and Darjus Lavrinovic joined others in lifting the Special Olympics "flame of hope" and in that way help support athletes with intellectual disabilities. Two days later, Union Olimpija players Sasu Salin and Suad Šehović greeted the arrival of Special Olympics flame to the Slovenian capital's Tivoli Park. "Euroleague clubs are for the second year in a row participating in the project of Special Olympics," said Matevž Zupančič, Union Olimpija's communications director. "Special Olympics athletes have been among our beloved visitors at basketball games for many years now, including last season's Euroleague game between Olimpija and Lottomatica Roma last year in Tivoli Arena. Continuing this year, the men and women of the Special Olympics team will be our guests also in the new Stožice Arena. Responsibility towards the community is part of being a professional sports club, something we feel strongly here in Union Olimpija." More than 1,600 Special Olympics athletes and 600 coaches from 58 countries in Europe/Eurasia will gather in Warsaw, Poland for the 2010 Special Olympics European Summer Games taking place from September 18 to 24. Two more Euroleague teams, Cholet Basket and Asseco Prokom Gdynia, will participate in the Special Olympics torch relay as the flame passes through France and reaches Poland, respectively.
