Maccabi president Mizrahi awarded Israel Prize

Israel’s Minister of Education Gideon Sa’ar announced Mizrahi as one of this year’s winners on Wednesday. The committee that selected Mizrahi emphasized his bringing new standards to management in Israeli sports and bringing numerous prestigious achievements to Israeli basketball and sports as a whole. Mizrahi, 71, is the seventh person to receive the Israel Prize in the field of sports and becomes the third person affiliated with Maccabi Tel Aviv’s basketball club top win the Israel Prize, joining former Euroleague champ Tal Brody (1979) and former Maccabi coach Ralph Klein (2006). Mizrahi has served as Maccabi president since 1969 and been a part of the club winning five European titles.

“I am excited and moved,” Mizrahi said after learning of the honor. “This is really a prize for Maccabi Tel Aviv as a whole. I have never done my work to receive a prize, but it brings joy to see that you are appreciated. It gives me energy to continue for many more years.”
