CSKA MOSCOW tabs Pops Mensah-Bonsu
Already planning for the Euroleague's next round, CSKA Moscow on Tuesday announced the signing of center Pops Mensah-Bonsu for the remainder of the season, pending the medical tests. Mensah-Bonsu (206, 26) will replace Courtney Sims, who had been on a tryout with CSKA during the last two weeks. Mensah-Bonsu arrives from Toronto of the NBA, where he averaged 3.3 points and 3.1 rebounds in 53 games. Mensah-Bonsu most recently played int he Euroleague for DKV Joventut at the beginning of last season. He was, in fact, the top-rated player according to the Euroleague's performance rating before a shoulder injury ended his time with the Spanish club after just two games. The previous season, 2007-08, Mensah-Bonsu appeared in 11 ULEB Cup games for Benetton Treviso, averaging 10 points and 8.4 rebounds. Mensah-Bonsu started his career in his native England before playing at George Washington University in the United States. He has also played short-term for NBA teams Dallas, San Antonio and Houston before he arrived in Toronto. Mensah-Bonsu is also a member of the Great Britain national team and was its best scorer during Eurobasket 2009 with 13.3 points and 4 rebounds on average. In its announcement, CSKA said that Mensah-Bonsu will not play the team's last regular season game against Caja Laboral on Thursday for first place in Group C, and therefore will make his Euroleague comeback in the Top 16.
