Rytas and Newley (2.00, 25) agreed to a two-year deal. Newley arrives from Turkish side Besiktas ColaTurka, where he averaged 16.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in the regular season and 22.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in the playoffs. He helped Besiktas reach the Eurocup regular season last season with a pair of double-digit scoring games against WBC Raiffeisen Wels in the qualifying rounds, but missed most of the regular season due to injury. Newley authored 17 points on excellent shooting in his lone Eurocup appearance last season. It was Newley’s third in the Eurocup after a season each in Greece with Panellinios and Panionios. He grew up with Forestville Eagles in his native Australia, where he also played for Townsville Crocodiles. Newley is also a member of the Australian national team with whom he competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. As a “Boomer” Newley won the gold medal at the 2003 World Junior Championships in Greece. He becomes the second Australian on the L. Rytas roster alongside center Aron Baynes.
