LIETUVOS RYTAS, Kurtinaitis part ways
Rimas Kurtinaitis - Lietuvos RytasLietuvos Rytas has announced that head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis will not lead the club next season. He was under contract until the end of the 2010-11 season. Kurtinaitis arrived to Vilnius in December 2008 replacing Antanas Sireika and led the club to a historical season, winning as many as four titles - the Baltic League, the Lithuanian League, the Lithuanian Cup and above all, the Eurocup. L. Rytas rallied to beat Khimki to claim its second Eurocup title, opening the door to return to the Euroleague. Kurtinaitis led L. Rytas to win the Lithuanian League and the Lithuanian Cup titles but his team failed to win the Baltic League and could not reach the Euroleague Top 16. A world-renowned shooter for almost two decades, Kurtinaitis won World, European and Olympic Championships as a player for the Soviet Union in the 1980s, as well as making it to the 1984 Saporta Cup and the 1986 Euroleague finals with Zalgiris. "This is a coach's life, even when it is more pleasant to leave with a win than in defeat. Maybe the team is not playing that well and can do better, but it goes for sure that will play in a different way once the new coach bring in new ideas," coach Kurtinaitis said. "Working for Lietuvos Rytas in Vilnius was one of the finest periods in my life. Our working conditions have been exceptional and the results we got have been some of the best in club's history."
