REAL MADRID tabs point guard Rodriguez
One of the most creative point guards in the world is headed home to Spain as Real Madrid confirmed a three-year deal with playmaker Sergio Rodriguez on Friday. Rodriguez (191, 24) arrives from New York of the NBA, where he averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 assists in 27 games last season. He started the 2009-10 season with Sacramento before being traded to New York. He had previously spent three seasons with Portland of the NBA. Rodriguez is not a Euroleague newcomer, as he averaged 6.4 points and 2.7 assists in 14 games as a teenager with another Madrid team, Adecco Estudiantes, in the 2004-05 season. He has also found success with the Spanish national team, with whom he won the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championships, playing a critical role off the bench in the semifinal against Argentina. Rodriguez rose to prominence while leading the Spanish under-18 national team to victory in the 2004 European Championships. He was named MVP after leading the tournament in assists with 8.5 per game. Rodriguez also made it to the EuroBasket 2007 final with Spain.
