PANATHINAIKOS, Obradovic stay together
The most successful coach in European basketball history, Zeljko Obradovic, is staying put with Panathinaikos. As their team celebrated its 31st Greek League title in Athens on Wednesday, Panathinaikos owners Paul and Thannis Giannakopoulos announced publicly a new, two-year agreement with Obradovic. "Today is a big moment for Panathinaikos, because we celebrate the Greek League title and the new contract with our coach, Zeljko Obradovic," Paul Giannakopoulos said.
Obradovic, 50, took over Panathinaikos in the summer of 1999 and since has won 20 trophies with the Greens, becoming the most successful coach in the history of the club, Greek and European basketball. In all he has won a record seven Euroleague titles with four different clubs in addition to taking the Saporta Cup twice and numerous medals with the Yugoslavian a national team. Obradovic was named the Alexander Gomelskiy Euroleague Coach of the Year in 2007.
"I feel very good here and I hope that Panathinaikos will keep winning and celebrating. I have nothing special to comment on my new signing," Obradovic said. "Everything is known and clear. Now we have to prepare the team for next season in order to be successful and make our fans happy."
