BARCELONA, Vazquez renew deal
Regal FC Barcelona will have the anchor of its defense back in the lineup this season after renewing the contract of Fran Vazquez for an additional season. The athletic big man is the Euroleague's career shot-blocking leader and set a record for most blocks in the Euroleague title game when he rejected 4 Olympiacos shots in the final in Paris in May. Vazquez (209, 27) averaged 7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and .1 blocks in 17 minutes per game last season, helping Barca win the Euroleague. He overtook former teammate Denis Marconato as the Euroleague's career shot-blocking king during the season and enters the new campaign with 139 – and no active player is within 20 of him. Vazquez is also on the verge of overtaking Roberto Duenas as Barcelona’s career shot-blocking leader. In four seasons with Barcelona, Vazquez has won the Euroleague once, the Spanish League once and the Spanish King’s Cup twice, including in 2010 when Vazquez was named MVP. He began his career at the CB Xantada juniors and has also played for Galicia, Pais Vasco, Auna Canarias, Unicaja and Girona. Vazquez is a member of the Spanish national team and is expected to take part in the World Championships later this summer in Turkey.
"I am pleased and proud that the club has decided to pick up the option they had to renew for another season," Vazquez said. "I've always said I feel good in Barcelona and I have the desire to continue giving joy to our fans, who always support us. Next season will be very exciting in every way. Our aim is to repeat in the Euroleague, but we know it will be complicated. But having the opportunity to do so at home is a major challenge."
