VIRTUS ROMA gets Charles Smith
Charles Smith - Efes Pilsen_24033Virtus Roma brought some serious scoring punch to its backcourt by signing veteran swingman Charles Smith for the coming season. Smith (193, 35) arrives from Turkish side Efes Pilsen, where he has spent the past two seasons. He was the first winner of Euroleague Basketball's Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy in 2005, when he averaged 20.6 points per game for Scavolini Pesaro. Smith also was selected to the All-Euroleague Second Team that season. Last season he posted 12.6 points in 16 Euroleague games for Efes and 12.1 points in the Turkish League. He needs just 64 more points this season to reach 1,000 in his Euroleague career. Roma will be Smith's fourth Italian team after previous stints with Udine, Virtus Bolgna and Pesaro. He has also played in the NBA for Miami, Los Angeles (Clippers), San Antonio, Portland and Denver, for Makedonikos Kozani in Greece, For Real Madrid in Spain and Efes in Turkey. With Madrid, Smith was named MVP of the 2007 ULEB Cup Final after leading his side to victory. Among his other career highlights are winning the Spanish League in 2007 and Turkish League in 2009. At Roma, Smith will be reunited with his first coach in Europe, Matteo Boniciolli.
