UNION OLIMPIJA tabs Damir Markota
Damir Markota - Bizkaia Bilbao BasketUnion Olimpija keeps building its roster for the upcoming Turkish Airlines Euroleague Basketball season by inking power forward Damir Markota to a one-year deal, the club announced Wednesday. Markota (210, 24) arrives from Bizkaia Bilbao Basket, where he averaged 4.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16 Eurocup games last season. He helped Bilbao to reach the Eurocup semifinals in each of the last two seasons. Markota has also played for Cibona and Sanac Karlovac in Croatia, Zalgiris in Lithuania, Spartak St.Petersburg in Russia, Milwaukee in the NBA and Tulsa in the D-League. Markota has also been a member of the Croatian national team. He won three Croatian League titles with Cibona in 2002, 2004 and 2006. Markota also lifted three trophies - Lithuanian League, Baltic League and Lithuanian Cup - with Zalgiris in 2008. "Damir Markota is a well-known player in European basketball whose skills are undeniable. The club had decided to try him out in the past few days but we were completely satisfied with his readiness and approach," Olimpija coach Jure Zdovc said. "I am glad that we were able to find a common language to sign him and that his experience will help the team a lot at power forward and center."
