MONTEPASCHI turns to veteran Jaric
Faced with the loss of its backcourt leader during the Top 16, Montepaschi Siena on Friday announced the signing of former Euroleague champion Marko Jaric until the end of the season.Jaric (201, 32), a combo guard, arrives to help fill the void left by injury to Bo McCalebb, who broke his foot on Sunday and was operated on Wednesday. McCalebb will be out indefinitely. Jaric had not played since finishing last season with Real Madrid of Spain, in his return to the Euroleague under head coach Ettore Messina, with whom he had won the 2001 continental title at Kinder Bologna. Jaric averaged 7.1 points in 12 games for Real Madrid after joining the club at mid-season. Jaric started his career in Peristeri of the Greek League in 1996. In 1998 he moved to Italy to play with Teamsystem Bologna, where he won the 1999-2000 Italian League. After that, he switched teams in Basket City and joined Kinder under Messina. There, Jaric exploded at a continental level, helping guide Kinder to the Euroleague title in a best-of-five series against Tau Ceramica in 2001. That year, he and Kinder conquered the triple crown by adding the Italian League and the Italian Cup titles, too. The following season, Jaric was voted first-team All-Euroleague while Kinder reached the title game at the 2002 Bologna Final Four, but finished runner-up to to Panathinaikos. Jaric spent the next seven seasons in the NBA, the first three with the Los Angeles Clippers, the next three with Minnesota, and the last one in Memphis.
