UNICAJA keeps coach Mateo & scorer Fitch
Unicaja has started to get ready for the upcoming 2011-12 season by extending scoring ace Gerald Fitch for one more year, the club announced Friday. It also confirmed that Chus Mateo will stay as the team's head coach next season. Mateo, age 42, became the team's head coach in mid-January, leading the team to the Spanish League playoffs. Mateo previously was an assistant coach at Fuenlabrada of the Spanish League and was also the assistant of Sergio Scariolo on the Spanish national team. He had previously been on Unicaja's bench as Scariolo's assistant in Malaga, too. "I am very proud and really happy for the decision Unicaja made. It is an honour and a matter of pride to keep coaching this team," Mateo said. "The only thing in my mind is to give back the hope and excitement that the people who direct the club have in me, and of course to make our fans happy, as they really deserve it." Fitch (191, 28) averaged 8.7 points and 4 rebounds in 3 Euroleague games last season. He did better in the Spanish League, averaging 15 points and 4.4 rebounds. Fitch previously played for Fuenlabrada in Spain, Antalya and Galatasaray in Turkey, Detroit, Houston and Miami in the NBA, Cantu in Italy, Austin in the NBA Development League, Khimik in Ukraine and Cibona in Zagreb.
