PANATHINAIKOS lands Schortsanitis
One of the most unstoppable centers in world basketball switched Turkish Airlines Euroleague teams when Panathinaikos Athens announced the arrival of Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who inked a three-year deal with his new club on Wednesday. Schortsanitis (2.06 meters, 27 years old) arrives from Maccabi Electra, where he averaged 8.7 points on 59.5% two-point shooting, 3 rebounds and 4.3 fouls drawn in 21 Euroleague games last season despite stepping on court less than 16 minutes per night. Schortsanitis earned All-Euroleague first team honors in 2010-11, averaging 12 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.7 rebounds in 22 games and helping Maccabi to reach the title game. Schortsanitis made his first season with Maccabi a breakout one by leading the Turkish Airlines Euroleague in scoring per-minute. He also drew the third-most fouls (104) and made the fourth-most free throws (65) in the 2010-11 Euroleague despite averaging less than 20 minutes per game. Schortsanitis played four more Euroleague seasons with Olympiacos, reaching the Final Four in 2009 and the title game in 2010, where the Reds lost to Regal F.C. Barcelona. He reached the Euroleague playoffs in all of its six seasons with Olympiacos and Maccabi. Schortsanitis has also played for Iraklis and Aris in Greece and Cantu in Italy, as well as being a member of the Greek national team. He helped Greece to reach the 2006 FIBA World Championships final and win a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2009.
