REGAL FCB locks up Vazquez
Spanish champ Regal FC Barcelona made sure that one of its key inside players will stick around for a few more years by re-signing big man Fran Vazquez, for the next two seasons. Vazquez (2.09 meters, 28 years old) averaged 8.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 block per game last season in 20 Euroleague appearances. This season will be his sixth with Barcelona, with whom he won the 2010 Euroleague plus two Spanish League crowns and three Spanish King’s Cups. Vazquez is the Euroleague’s all-time leader in blocks with a total 159 - 31 more than former teammate Denis Marconato in second place. By keeping Vazquez on the team, Barca now boasts a trademark powerful frontcourt with Erazem Lorbek and Kosta Perovic, and could still add a new name later in the summer. Vazquez started at CB Xantada and then moved to Siglo XXI, a team for young talents in Spain, from 1997 to 2001 before joining Malaga – the second team of Unicaja – in 2001-02. He made his debut in the Spanish League in 2002-03 with Unicaja and the following season he was sent on loan to Gran Canaria where he had a solid year. In 2005, he joined the Akasvayu Girona project, but the following year he spurned an NBA offer after being chosen in that league's draft lottery and chose FC Barcelona, where he has played since.
