CSKA MOSCOW re-signs big center Sokolov
CSKA Moscow re-signed Dmitry Sokolov, one of its top players in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague last season, to a two-year deal, the club announced Tuesday. Sokolov (2.14 meters, 26 years old) has spent the past two seasons with CSKA. Last year he posted 8.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 22 minutes over 10 Euroleague games. In his two seasons with CSKA, Sokolov has been to one Euroleague Final Four, won two Russian championships and one Russian Cup. Sokolov has played entire career in his native Russia. Before joining CSKA, he spent three years with Unics Kazan and has also played for Stavropol, Pulkovo St. Petersburg, Lokomotiv Mineralnye Vody and Lokomotiv Rostov. Sokolov has also represented the Russian national teams at the junior and senior levels.
"I am happy to stay at CSKA because I have felt at home here in the past two years," Sokolov said. "I think that I have improved year by year and I hope that my actions will help the team improve. I am trying to work more – I plan to practice again in the summer to improve my skills and strength. I don't want to get used to a backup role: I am ready to show myself, to prove, to fight for the coach's trust and playing time."
"I am happy to have Dmitry on our roster, because he plays his role well, he understands the tasks," CSKA head coach Jonas Kazlauskas commented. "He received different amounts of playing time in different period of the season and worked them out well. Besides he possesses a positive aura. Every team needs role players able to help in games and practices. You cannot have only starters in a big club."
