OLYMPIACOS lands Papadopoulos
Olympiacos BC announced the signing of center Lazaros Papadopoulos to a one-year deal on Tuesday. Papadopoulos (2.10 meters, 31 years old) arrives from BC Khimki Moscow Region, which he joined during the past season and averaged 4.2 points and 4.3 rebounds in 25 Russian League games to help the club reach the title series against CSKA. He started the 2010-11 season with PAOK and led the Eurocup regular season in rebounding with 12.2 per game in addition to 16 points. Papadopoulos has also played for Iraklis and Panathinaikos in Greece, Real Madrid in Spain and Fortitudo Bologna in Italy. He helped Panathinaikos win the 2002 Euroleague title by playing a key role off the bench in the title game against Kinder Bologna. He also lifted the Greek League and the Greek Cup trophies with the Greens in 2003. Papadopoulos later won the ULEB Cup with Dynamo in 2006 under head coach Dusan Ivkovic by posting a double-double in the title game against Aris. He also helped the Greek national team win the gold medal at EuroBasket 2005 and make it to the 2006 FIBA World Championships title game. Papadopoulos becomes the 15th player to work for both Olympiacos and Panathinaikos.
"A new chapter opens for me and I hope that it will be a good one. Olympiacos is trying to put together a team with a family atmosphere and I like that. There are some pieces that fit with one another to create a nice puzzle," Papadopoulos said. "I am also happy to work with coach Dusan Ivkovic, since we had a fantastic cooperation in Dynamo Moscow. I missed the tension in the big games between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos and I am looking forward to that experience again."
