PANATHINAIKOS adds young guns Pappas, Jankovic

Pappas, JankovicGreek League champion Panathinaikos Athens has landed two of the most promising young players in European basketball, small forward Vladimir Jankovic and scoring guard Nikos Pappas, both of whom inked respective three-year deals with the Greens on Thursday. Both players arrive from Panionios BC Athens. Jankovic (2.02 meters, 23 years old) Jankovic averaged 7.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in 6 Eurocup games last season. The biggest highlight in his Eurocup season was a buzzer-beating three-point shot which allowed Panionios to beat Telenet Oostende 101-100 in overtime. Jankovic boosted his numbers up to 12.5 points and 6.7 rebounds in 34 Greek League games, helping Panionios to finish third overall. His father, the late Boban Jankovic, was a Greek basketball superstar and a legend for Panionios fans. Vladimir Jankovic started his career with Panionios at the cadet level and has played in his club until now other than the 2008-09 season, in which he was sent on loan to Mega Hypo Leasing of Serbia. Jankovic has been a member of the Greek U16, U18, U19 and U20 national teams. Pappas and Jankovic helped Greece to win the 2008 U18 European Championships and the 2009 U20 European Championships. Jankovic also won respective silver medals at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championships and the 2010 U20 European Championships.

Pappas (1.94 meters, 22 years old) averaged 19.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals in 6 Eurocup games last season. His best game came on the road against Unics Kazan, when Pappas had 34 points and 6 steals for a performance index rating of 44. He led the Eurocup regular season in steals and was its second-best scorer. Pappas also shined in the Greek League, averaging 16.7 points, 4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals in 34 games. He started his career with Panellinios Athens and also played for Real Madrid's second team and Bilbao Basket in Spain, as well as for VAP Kolossos and PAOK in Greece. Pappas is also a member of the Greek national team. Other than the four medals he got with Jankovic in several youth tournaments, Pappas also won a silver medal at the 2007 U18 European Championships.
