Portuguese Cup Final Eight: March 22-25
Porto Ferpinta is the Portuguese Cup champion! Porto was the 53rd edition of this tournament by downing Belenenses Hyundai Lusifor 86-77 in the title game in Pacos de Ferreira on Sunday. Thomas Sorrentine led the winners with 19 points. Nuno Marcal added 18, Paulo Cunha had 15 and John Whorton 14 for Porto. Jason Robinson had 20 points for Belenenses while Brian Robinson added 19. Porto alrady led 51-35 at the half and did not find much trouble to retain the title. It was the end of an exciting Final that started with the quarterfinals on Thursday and Friday. On Thursdaym Porto downed Ginasio 54-73 behind 18 points from Cunha, Lusitania Angra PM edged Queluz Sintra PM 83-88 with 28 points from Willy Taylor, while on Friday, Barreirense upset Benfica 66-57 with 19 points from Dusan Macura while Belenenses edged CAB Madeira 85-83 behind 23 points and 12 rebounds from Cameron Echols. In the semifinals on Saturday, Porto downed Lusitania 82-73 with 18 points from Marcal while Belenenses downed Barreirense 69-76 behind 23 points from Diogo Carreira. Despite the loss, Robinson was chosen as the title game MVP.
