CSKA celebrates fifth straight Russian Title, photo: cskabasket.com Showing the team play that has made it one of Europe's top teams all decade, CSKA Moscow is once again the Russian League champion! CSKA won its fifth consecutive Russian League crown, its 14th since the Russian League was created in 1992 and its 38th counting Soviet Union titles by sweeping its best-of-five title series against Unics Kazan by 3-0. CSKA edged Unics 71-78 in Kazan in Game 3 on Thursday, enough to finish yet another successful season in which the team also won the Russian Cup and made it to the Euroleague title game. Trajan Langdon led the winners with 19 points while hitting 4 of 9 three-point shots. David Andersen added 15 points while Matjaz Smodis had 13 for CSKA. Ksystof Lavrinovic had 20 points for Unics, his twin brother Darjus added 15. Jarod Stevenson put in an additional 12 points and Jerry McCullough 10 for the hosts. Unics had led at intervals throughout the game, but CSKA managed to keep a slim lead all the way through the final period until free throws by J.R. Holden and Smodis sealed the outcome.MORE

2006-07 RUSSIAN LEAGUE PREVIEW
CSKA Moscow will be once again the team to beat in the Russian League, one of the fastest rising European domestic competitions in recent years, with talented players all over place. CSKA opted to keep most of its roster which led the team to win the Triple Crown - Euroleague, Russian League and Russian Cup titles. As such, Theodoros Papaloukas, David Vanterpool, Trajan Langdon, Matjaz Smodis, David Andersen, J.R. Holden or Tomas Van den Spiegel will be back to challenge for each and every competition. Its biggest opponents could be Dynamo Moscow, which landed some of the best free agents in the off-season market getting ready for its Euroleague debut. Travis Hansen, Miroslav Raicevic or Sergey Monya join top returnees Mire Chatman, Bojan Popovic, Lazaros Papadopoulos, Antonis Fotsis or Dmitry Domani. Unics Kazan landed Darjus Lavrinovic to play alonmg his twin brother Ksystof, as well as inking Mateen Cleaves or Aleksander Miloserdov. Meanwhile, Dynamo St. Petersburg kept its core of players featuring Vladimir Veremeenko, Ognjen Askrabic, Kelly McCarty or Damir Miljkovic, as well as landing Eddie Gill, Goran Jeretin or Nikita Morgunov. Khimki will also be one of the teams to beat with Ruben Wolkowiski, Melvin Booker, Boris Gorenc, Gianmarco Pozzecco or Oscar Torres, who all played together last season. The arrival of Pavel Podkolzine adds size and intimidation in the middle. Ural Great, with Maurice Whitfield, Sam Hoskin or Zeljko Zagorac, Lomomotiv Rostov, which put together an entire new roster featuring Maurice Bailey, Omar Sneed, Vangelis Sklavos or Valentin Koubrakov, as well as Dynamo Moscow Region, which landed superstars such as Goran Jagodnik, Roderick Blakney or Nikolai Padius, will be in the playoff race, too. Expect nothing but a thrilling competition in which a lot of talented teams will challenge CSKA for the Russian League title!
