Russian League, Game 25: Mar. 26 - Apr. 1, 2007
Lokomotiv Rostov provided one of the biggest surprises in the Russian League this season by downing mighty CSKA Moscow 82-77 on the road on Thursday. Rostov improved to 15-6 while CSKA is still first at 19-3. Kresimir Loncar led the winners with 22 points on 11-of-15 two-pointers. Trajan Langdon had 14 points for CSKA, Matjaz Smodis and Aleksey Savrasenko each added 13 while Theodoros Papaloukas tallied 10 for the guests. Savrasenko gave CSKA its last lead, 66-68, with 5 minutes to go. Lokomotiv used an 11-2 run that Asim Pars capped with a basket that gave Rostov a 77-70 lead. CSKA got within 79-75 with a minute to go, but Vangelis Sklavos nailed a triple to seal the outcome. Unics stayed second at 17-3 by downing Dynamo Moscow 75-61 in Kazan on Saturday. Darjus Lavrinovic paced the winners with 24 points and his twin brother Ksystof added 13. Antonis Fotsis had 15 points for Dynamo while Lazaros Papadopoulos added 10. The Lavrinovic twins combined for 22 points in the first half, as Unics got a 39-22 margin at the break and never looked back. It was a productive week for Khimki, that got consecutive wins to improve to 18-4 in the standings. Khimki beat Dynamo Moscow 74-79 on the road on Monday. Vladimir Veremeenko led Khimki with 18 points. Kelly McCarty added 16, Maciej Lampe had 14, Vitaliy Fridzon 12 and Melvin Booker 10 for the winners. Papadopoulos had 22 points for Dynamo, Eddie Gill added 16, Dimitry Domani 12 and Fotsis 11. Veremeenko and Booker stepped up in the final 2 minutes to make Khimki keep a safe lead until the final buzzer. Khimki had less troubles to down Spartak 64-81 in St. Petersburg on Saturday. Lampe had 15 points for Khimki, McCarty had 14 while Booker and Ruben Wolkowyski each scored 11 in an easy road win for their team. In other games, Samara edged Standart 91-98 while Dynamo Moscow Region thrashed Sibirtelekom 72-98 behind 24 points from Nikolai Padius.
