Turkish League, Game 26: March 31-April 1, 2007
Fenerbahce Ulker beat Tofas Bursa and took advantage of Turk Telekom's surprising defeat at the hands of Banvit to toake sole possession of first place in the Turkish League. Fener's 60-78 road win saw the Istanbul-based club improve to 24-2 – one win more than both Turk Telekom and Efes Pilsen, which recorded a 92-67 home win over Pinar Karsiyaka. Besiktas saw its grip on fourth place slip with a narrow home defeat to CASA TED Kolejliler, 76-77. Galatasaray Cafe Crown improved to 17-9 by beating Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 85-69. In other games, Mersin Buyuksehir Belediye downed Alpella 62-75, Darussafaka topped Oyak Renault 75-60 and Tekel beat Beykoz 83-96.
Fenerbahce got off to a poor start, but recovered quickly through Ibrahim Kutluay and Damir Mrsic to lead 13-16 at the end of the first quarter. Mirsad Turkcan and Will Solomon took the charge in the second quarter and rocketed the visitors to 15-24 at the midway point of the period. Tofas responded with Hakan Koseoglu and Melih Yavsaner to cut the difference to a single point at the end of the first half, 28-29. Fener remained ahead in the third quarter with Omer Onan and Kutluay leading the way and when Solomon chimed in, the visitors raced to 42-56 at the end of 30 minutes. There was nothing for Tofas to do in the last quarter and buckets by Ira Clark and Turkcan brought Fener the 60-78 win. Turkcan posted a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds, Solomon scored 16 points, Kutluay had 11 and Clark 10 for Fener. Adem Oren and Rasheed Brokenbrough scored 13 apiece for Tofas. Turk Telekom, which suffered its first defeat of the season to Banvit earlier in the season, lost to the Bandirma team once more, this time 74-77 at home in overtime. Erwin Dudley's layup tied the game at 69-69 at the end of regulation, but it was not enough for Telekom to save the game. Marque Perry scored 4 points in the closing minutes to bring the victory to Banvit, which is challenging to climb up to fourth position instead of Besiktas Cola Turka. Perry led Banvit with 19, Bekir Yarangume added 15, Art Long 14 and Ersin Gorkem had 9. Dudley scored game-high 31 points and Tutku Acik posted 18 for Telekom.
Efes Pilsen strolled to another easy victory by beating Pinar Karsiyaka 92-67 at the Abdi Ipekci Arena. The hosts struggled a bit in the first quarter, at the end of which they led 21-17. But from that point, Efes slowly but surely pulled away. Drew Nicholas scored 20 points, Antonio Granger and Marcus Haislip had 14 each and Can Akin and Kerem Gonlum added 11 apiece for Efes. Alwin Snow scored 19, Nedim Yucel 16 and Inanc Koc 10 for Karsiyaka. Besiktas Cola Turka, which beat Pinar Karsiyaka on the road last week, lost again at home, this time against CASA TED Kolejliler of Ankara, 76-77. The home team went 13 points down in the second period after a layup by Ufuk Kacar, but used zone pressure in the remaining minutes of the half to reduce the difference to 36-41 at halftime. Besiktas leveled the game in the third quarter, but Kolejliler kept the lead in the hand and Marques Green made it 56-57 after 30 minutes. Besiktas's pressure at the beginning of the last period and baskets by Cevher Ozer and Ivan McFarlin put Besiktas ahead 60-57. But Ufuk Kacar, Green, Alex Jensen and Jay Hansen came up big and the visitors, who dominated the boards 19-32, powered their way back. Kacar's free throws with 17 seconds to go made it 72-77. Harvey drilled a three-pointer to make it 75-77 and then CASA TED lost the ball and fouled on Erdal Bibo with 3 seconds remaining, but Bibo missed one and CASA TED won the breathtaking game. Green lead CASA TED with 21 points, Hansen had 15, Kacar 13 and Jensen 12. Veyseloglu scored a game-high 23 for Besiktas, Harvey added 19 and Baris Ozcan scored 18.
