HEBA - Greece HEBA
Greek League finals, Game 5: June 20, 2007
Panathinaikos celebrates Panathinaikos has won its fifth straight domestic title and first-ever triple crown - the Greek League, Greek Cup and Euroleague titles - in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, downing archrival Olympiacos 89-76 in do-or-die fifth Game 5 of their playoff final series at home in OAKA arena. Panathinaikos claimed a 3-2 series victory as each team won all its home games. The Greens now have won nine Greek League titles in the last decade and 28th overall. Mike Batiste paced the Greens with 15 points, while Ramunas Siskauskas added 13 and Dimitrios Papanikolaou 12. Dimitris Diamantidis had 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals for the Greens. For Olympiacos, who led 45-46 at halftime, Andrija Zizic and Alex Acker scored 12 each. Panathinaikos broke open an otherwise balanced game in the third quarter, as Fragiskos Alvertis and an outstanding Siskauskas gave the Greens a 68-57 lead after 30 minutes. Olympiacos got within 77-72 with less than 3 minutes to go, but a critical triple by Siskauskas and good accuracy from the free throw line allowed Panathinaikos to end up winning it all this season! 2006-07 GREEK LEAGUE PREVIEW
As one of the most competitive championships in Europe, the Greek League returns with a top contender, none other than Panathinaikos, won lifted the league trophy 8 times in the last 9 years. Panathinaikos hopes to keep its dynasty alive with arguably the deepest roster in the continent. The Greens landed a whole starting five in Sani Becirovic, Tony Delk, Ramunas Siskauskas, Dimos Dikoudis and Robertas Javtokas, who will all play along Mike Batiste, Dimitris Diamantidis, Dejan Tomasevic, Kostas Tsartsaris or Nikos Hatzivrettas. Archrivals Olympiacos are ready to break the dynasty, as the Reds landed one of the best coaches in the business, Pini Gershon, as well as inking Ryan Stack, Scoonie Penn, Alek Acker, Gerry McNamara, Henry Domercant and above all, Arvydas Macijauskas, one of the best shooters in European basketball. Sofoklis Schortsianitis is ready to dominate in the middle with the help of Stack, Giannis Bouroussis or Andrija Zizic. Aris faces a historical season with its Euroleague return which the team should back with a solid perfomance in its domestic competition. Aris landed talented players at each spot like Alex Scales, Savvas Iliadis, Spyros Panteliadis, Simonas Serapinas, Jeremiah Massey, Giannis Giannoulis or Kevin Fletcher, who will join forces with Mike Wilkinson, Giorgos Sigalas or Terrell Castle. PAOK is also back with a powerful lineup featuring Vlado Scepanovic, Andy Panko, Blagota Sekulic and Lazaros Agadakos, and it should be battling for a Euroleague spot. Maroussi landed Danya Abrams and Renaldas Seibutis while AEK renewed its roster, bringing in Nestoras Kommatos, Paul McPherson or Christos Tapoutos. Panionios, with Andre Hutson, Dragan Lukovski or Nikos Hatzis, and Panellinios, with Pete Mickeal, Damir Rancic and Michalis Pelekanos, should be in the fight to reach the playoffs.
