Polish League, Game 26: April 4-5, 2007
The Polish League regular season drew to a close on Thursday as the pairings for the best-of-three quarterfinals were set. Defending champion Prokom Trefl Sopot finished first in the regular season – despite losing its finale to Anwil Wloclawek 100-68 – with a 21-4 record and will meet Polpharma Starogard Gdanski in the first round of the playoffs for the third year in a row. The other quarterfinal pairings feature Turow vs. Stal, Asco vs. Polpak, and Anwil vs. Czarni. Heading into the final games, only the fifth, sixth and seventh places were in question. Energa Czarni finished fifth thanks to an 86-74 home win over Turow Zgorzelec. Omar Barlett led five Czarni scorers in double figures with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Lance Williams had 20 and 7 for Turow. Polpak Swiecie came back to beat Stal Ostrow 72-51 after trailing by double figures early on. Haris Nana finished with 26 points and 9 rebounds for Stal. In other games, Asco Slask took an 82-67 decision over Sokolow Znicz Jaroslaw. Kager Gdynia beat Kotwica Kolobrzeg behind Kordian Korytek’s 16 points and 9 rebounds, David Witos scored a season-high 29 points to help AZS Koszalin beat Unia Tarnow 114-82, and Patrick Okafor had a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds and Ivo Kitzinger added 23 in Polpharma’s 98-87 victory over Polonia.
Anwil played without Otis Hill and Gatis Jahovics, while Prokom missed Rashid Atkins and Jeff Nordgaard. The game was even till the third quarter. Then Anwil stepped up its defense and Prokom could not answer. Andrzej Pluta led the way with 25 points including 3 triples. Seid Hajric finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Former Prokom Player Goran Jagodnik added 21 points. Christian Dalmau led Prokom with 14 points, Donatas Slanina added 12 and Michael Andersen 10.
