Italian League, Game 27: April 7, 2007
Some thrillers took place in the Italian League on Saturday, even when nothing changed atop the standings. Montepaschi Siena rallied from a halftime deficit to beat Angelico Biella 100-92 in Siena. Joseph Forte led the winners with 25 points, Rimantas Kaukenas added 22 and Shaun Stonerook had 18. Lottomatica Roma keeps tying for the second spot at 18-9 by thrashing Legea Scafati 86-69 at home behind 20 points from David Hawkins. Benetton Treviso stayed focused to get a 78-84 road win against Air Avellino. Marcus Goree led the winners with 22 points, Preston Shumpert added 20 while Terrell Lyday had 18 for Benetton. Mike Penberthy provided a highlight with a game-winning triple that allowed Snaidero Cucine Udine to edge Whirlpool Varese 73-71 and improve to 11-16 in the standings. Climamio Bologna bounced back from recent losses to top Tisettanta Cantu 81-65 at home behind 17 points from Stefano Mancinelli, while Eldo Napoli moved up to 15-12 by topping Upea Capo d'Orlando 79-77 at home. In other games, Armani Jeans Milano bested VidiVici Bologna 88-76, Bibop Carire Reggio Emilia edged Premiata Montegranaro 78-80 while TDShop.it Livorno rallied to beat Siviglia Wear Teramo 78-75 with a game-winning triple by Jason Rowe.
Montepaschi added yet another home win in the Italian League by downing Angelico Biella 100-92 in Siena. Forte led the winners with 25 points, Kaukenas added 22, Stonerook had 18, Terrell McIntyre 12 and Ben Eze 11 for Montepaschi, that trailed 44-51 at halftime. Kaukenas led the Montepaschi comeback late in the third quarter, as the hosts got a 72-64 margin after 30 minutes. Even when Biella got within 92-88, Forte and Kaukenas allowed Montepaschi to stay ahead for good. Lottomatica Roma keeps tying for the second spot at 18-9 by thrashing Legea Scafati 86-69 at home. Hawkins paced the winners with 20 points, Erazem Lorbek added 16 and Alex Righetti 10 for Lottomatica, that led 49-27 at halftime and did not find much trouble to add an easy home win. Benetton Treviso took another step to get out of its difficult situation by edging Air Avellino 78-84 on the road. Goree led the winners with 22 points, Shumpert added 20 while Lyday had 18 for Benetton, that trailed 58-53 after 30 minutes. A 0-11 run that Goree capped with a triple allowed Benetton to break the game open and cruise to a key road win.
Climamio Bologna improved to 12-15 by downing Tisettanta Cantu 81-65 at home. Mancinelli paced the winners with 17 points, Marco Belinelli added 14, Moochie Norris had 13 and Jerome Moiso 11 for Climamio, that led 32-7 after 10 minutes. Cantu got within 48-43 midway through the third quarter, but a 13-0 run that Mancinelli capped with a triple sealed the outcome. Snaidero Udine had to battle hard to edge Whirlpool Varese 73-71 on a game-winning triple by Penberthy. Jacob Jaacks had 19 points for Udine, that improved to 11-16. Michele Antonutti added 14, Jerome Allen 12 and Silvio Gigena 10. Udine led 59-49 after three quarters, but free throws by Delonte Holland allowed Varese to get a 70-71 edge. Penberthy stepped up with the game-winning triple right when it mattered. Eldo Napoli moved up to 15-12 by topping Upea Capo d'Orlando 79-77 at home. Ansu Sesay led Napoli with 18 points. Michel Morandais added 15, Mason Rocca 13 while Tyrone Ellis and Larry O'Bannon each had 11 for the winners. Alvin Young had 21 points for Upea, included a three-pointer for a 75-77 lead with a minute to go. Ellis answered from downtown and Sesay added a free throw, while Young and Herve Toure missed in Upea's final possessions.
