Spanish League, Regular Season week 28: April 6-8
Real Madrid and Tau Ceramica now tie stop the Spanish League standings, each with a 21-7 record. Winterthur FC Barcelona showed its power by edging Tau Ceramica 76-77 on a game-winning triple by Jaka Lakovic. Juan Carlos Navarro had 25 points for Barcelona while Luis Scola led Tau with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Real Madrid showed it is ready for the ULEB Cup final against Lietuvos Rytas by downing Polaris World CB Murcia 59-74 on the road on Friday behind 15 points from Felipe Reyes. DKV Joventut improved to 18-10 by downing Caja San Fernando 74-87 in Sevilla on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez led the winners with 29 points on 11-of-11 free throws, 4 assists and 5 steals. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas is now sixth at 16-12 by thrashing Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 71-55 at home also on Sunday while Unicaja dropped to 15-13 due to a 87-85 road loss against Grupo Capitol Valladolid. In other games, Pamesa Valencia rallied from an 18-point deficit to edge Pamesa Valencia 71-74 while ViveMenorca bested Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 77-71.
Winterthur FC Barcelona took the big showdown in the Spanish League this weekend by edging Tau Ceramica 76-77 on a game-winning triple by Lakovic. Barcelona improved to 19-9 while Tau dropped to 21-7. Navarro led the winners with 25 points, Jordi Trias added 13 while Michalis Kakiouzis had 10 for Barcelona. Scola led Tau with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds. Tiago Splitter added 17 points while Igor Rakocevic had 15 for the hosts. A three-pointer by Pablo Prigioni and a put-back basket by Kaya Peker allowed Tau to get a 43-39 lead at halftime. Barcelona trailed all the way in the third quarter, but a basket by Navarro got the guests within 58-57 after 30 minutes. The game saw 5 lead changes in the final period before Splitter hit 1 of 2 free throws for a 76-74 Tau edge with 12 seconds to go. Lakovic hit the game-winning shot in front of Prigioni and allowed Barcelona to escape with a valuable win. Real Madrid is back atop the standings with a 21-7 record by downing Polaris World CB Murcia 59-74 on the road on Friday, just five days before the ULEB Cup final against Lietuvos Rytas. Reyes paced the winners with 14 points, Kerem Tunceri added 12 and Raul Lopez 11 for Madrid, that trailed 34-33 at halftime. Three-pointers by Louis Bullock, Alex Mumbru and Tunceri broke the game open in the final period, 55-65, and the guests never looked back.
DKV Joventut improved to 18-10 by downing Caja San Fernando 74-87 in Sevilla on Sunday. Fernandez led the winners with 29 points on 11-of-11 free throws, 4 assists and 5 steals while Lubos Barton added 10 points for Joventut, that led 33-41 at halftime. Caja San Fernando managed to get within 65-68 with 4 minutes to go, but Ricky Rubio and an outstanding Fernandez stepped up in crunch time to make Joventut seal an important road win. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas is now sixth at 16-12 by thrashing Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 71-55 at home also on Sunday. Marcus Norris led the way for Gran Canaria with 15 points, Jackson Vroman added 12 while Jim Moran had 10 in an easy home win for the hosts, who led 34-28 at halftime and boosted their margin to 52-36 to seal the win long before the final buzzer. Unicaja dropped to 15-13 due to a 87-85 road loss against Grupo Capitol Valladolid. Joao Santos and Bernard Hopkins led the winners each with 19 points. Marko Tusek had 15 points for Unicaja, Carlos Jimenez added 14 and Marcus Faison 10. A fast break layup by Marcus Brown brought Unicaja within 85-82. Free throws by Santos put the victory on ice, as a three-pointer by Tusek came too late.
