British League, Week 30: April 6-8, 2007
Poujoulat Heat Guildford beat London United 114-85 on Sunday to win its first ever British Basketball League championship. In a close race that wasn't decided until the final day of the season, Guildford outlasted Sheffield Sharks with a 29-7 record. The result gave the Heat a second title this year after winning the BBL Cup. They will now take on London again in the first round of the playoffs in an attempt to finish the year with a trio of crowns. In the other quarterfinal matchups, Sheffield faces DMU Leicester Riders, Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks meet Kularoos Plymouth Raiders, and Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles take on Milton Keynes Lions. On Sunday, captain Mike Martin rose to the occasion with 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Guildford. Sheffield was in the driver's seat heading into the last weekend of the season, but a 94-89 loss at defending champs Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles on Friday derailed their title hopes. Tony Dorsey sparked the Eagles with 27. The Sharks finished the season with a win by downing 66-64 Milton Keynes Lions in their finale. Blake Shelton and Jeff Bonds scored 18 each for the winners. In Sunday's other results, Julius Jospeh scored 26 to lead the Rocks to a 94-83 win over the Worcester Wolves and the Raiders topped the Eagles 89-83 as DeAntoine Beasley posted 20 points.
