Israeli League, Game 18: April 9-10, 2007
Mario Austin - Hapoel Migdal Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv bounced back from back-to-back Israeli League defeats to trounce Gilboa/Afula 103-75 on Monday night and retain its narrow lead over second place Hapoel Jerusalem. On the next day, Hapoel went to the wire before edging Rishon Lezion 82-86 on the road road to improve to 15-3. Bnei Hasharon was without Lee Nailon, but nevertheless collected an easy 67-93 road win over Ironi Ramat Gan. Bnei Hasharon took a 10-point lead already in the first quarter and used a huge performance in the paint by Ousmane Cisse to dominate the game the rest of the way. Cisse scored only 12 points but added 9 rebounds and 7 blocks. Jason Williams led Bnei Hasharon with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Cookie Belcher and Moshe Mizrahi scored 20 points each. Galil Elyon easily beat Ironi Ashkelon 112-86 in a one-sided game. Galil used a 15-3 run at the end of the first quarter to pull away for good. Kenny Adeleke and Tre Simmons scored 22 points each and the latter added 12 rebounds. Marcus Hatten led Ashkelon with 23 points. In another one-sided affair, Ironi Nahariya downed visiting Givat Shmuel 89-62. Nahariya stormed the court from the first second and grabbed an 18-2 lead after 5 minutes and never looked back. Ido Kozikaro led Nahariya with 18 points and Sasa Ocokoljic added 16. New signing Reggie Moore led Givat Shmuel with 16.

Maccabi beat Afula by just 2 points on the road in their previous meeting, but on Monday the defending champs coasted to an easy 103-75 win. Derrick Sharp ignited his side in the first few minutes with two three-pointers that gave Maccabi a 12-3 lead. Sharp continued to hit and Yaniv Green set the first quarter score at 26-16. Simas Jasaitis warmed up his hand with two threes as well to give Maccabi a 16-point lead midway through the second quarter. Sharon Shason came off the bench for 8 quick points to give Maccabi a 52-35 halftime lead. Jermaine Hall was the only player for the visitors who excelled and his bucket made it 62-49, but Sharp and Lior Eliyahu turned on the engine and quickly made another run to decide the game. Six players scored in double figures for Maccabi, led by Eliyahu who had 18 points in 16 minutes. Jaime Arnold added 17, Shason 14, Sharp 13 and Jasaitis and Goran Jeretin scored 10 each. Hall finished with 30 points and 8 rebounds in defeat.

Hapoel celebrated the return of Matan Naor from injury with a tough 82-86 win. The reds climbed to 15-3, while Rishon is stuck in the last place in the standings. A very offensive oriented first quarter found Hapoel leading 27-31 after 10 minutes as Bryant Markson carried Rishon on his back. Naor's first bucket since his injury several months ago gave Hapoel a 9-point lead, but Markson made it 46-50 at half time. Hapoel took off to a 54-68 lead late in the third, but saw Markson and Itai Lev lead Rishon back into the game. Lev with 4 points in a row gave Rishon a 79-78 lead, but Terrence Morris quickly put Hapoel back on top and Meir Tapiro made it 82-85 from the line. Brian Tolbert had a chance to send the game to overtime, but missed twice from long range, and Guy Pnini set the final score from the line with 00:00 on the clock. Mario Austin led Hapoel with 19 points, Jurica Golemac scored 15 with 7 assists and Timmy Bowers added 13. Markson finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds for Rishon.
