Turkish League, Game 29: April 14, 2007
Efes Pilsen Istanbul recorded the biggest win in the Turkish League this season by beating lowly Beykoz 102-42 on Saturday. The win helped second place Efes improve to 26-3 – one win fewer than leader Fenerbahce Ulker, which overcame Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi on the road 85-90. Fener led by as many as 21 before Mersin stormed back in the fourth quarter. Turk Telekom slipped further away from the top two teams with a 78-68 loss at Pinar Karsiyaka. Marcus Slaughter led Karsiyaka with 23 points and 19 rebounds. Besiktas Cola Turka lost to Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 98-103, but remained in fifth place as Galatasaray Cafe Crown went down to Alpella 67-70. Caner Oner was the hero for Alpella with 21. In other games, Mike Jones scored 25 points to lead Darussafaka over Tekel 83-73, Marques Green had 28 points and 7 assists as CASA TED Kolejliler topped Oyak Renault 75-67 and Banvit beat Tofas on the road 68-84.
Fenerbahce Ulker worked hard to return from Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi with an 85-90 road win. Fenerbahce coach Aydin Ors was ejected after arguing with the referees at the end of the first quarter, which ended 20-20. The visitors took the lead in the second quarter thanks to Omer Onan and Ibrahim Kutluay and led 35-48 at halftime. In the third quarter, Damir Mrsic, Mirsad Turkcan and Semih Erden extended the lead to 21 points before settling at 51-70 after 30 minutes. But in the fourth, a lack of concentration allowed Mersin back asErnest Shelton, Umut Tinay, Umit Soknol and Jared Homan scored straight points to reduce the gap to 83-87 with 15 seconds to go. But Mrsic’s free throws relaxed Fenerbahce, which escaped with the win. Mrsic and Kutluay scored 16 each, Ira Clark had 14, Onan 11, and Turkcan and Oguz Savas scored 10 each. Sonkol finished with 19 and Tinay added 16 for Mersin.
Efes Pilsen, playing at home at the Abdi Ipekci, got off to a speedy start as Marcus Haislip and new playmaker Alexander Rasic scored early and often to build a 25-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second period, Drew Nicholas and Kerem Gonlum joined Rasic and Haislip and the home side extended the lead to 51-23 at halftime. Efes kept on ruling the game also in the third quarter as Cenk Akyol and Ermal Kuqo joined the scoring raceand the lead grew to 72-29. The fourth quarter was for protocol only and Efes coasted to a 60-point win. Haislip led the way with 18 points, Akyol added 15, Nicholas and Kuqo 11 each and Mustafa Abi had 10 for Efes. Eren Beyaz paced Beykoz with 12 points in defeat. Besiktas Cola Turka lost at home to Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 98-103 despite a fourth-quarter comeback. Besiktas entered the fourth period behind 67-87 and fought back behind Cevher Ozer and Donnell Harvey, but couldn’t complete the deal. Brian Boddicker scored a game-high 29 and Yunus Cankaya and David Lee Dixon had 16 each for Mutlu Aku. Harvey had 26 and Ozer added 24 for Besiktas.
