Spanish League, Game 29: April 14-15, 2007
Juan carlos Navarro - Winterthur FCB Real Madrid and Tau Ceramica registered respective wins this weekend and keep tying atop the Spanish League standings with a 22-7 record. Madrid used a late 14-3 run to beat Pamesa Valencia 78-66 at home on Saturday. Louis Bullock led the winners with 23 points. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica topped Etosa Alicante 66-73 on the road on Sunday behind 17 points and 11 rebounds from Tiago Splitter. Winterthur FC Barcelona stayed third with a 20-9 record by edging Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 66-75 on the road also on Sunday. Juan Carlos Navarro led the winners with 20 points while Roger Grimau added 14. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas stayed sixth at 17-12 by edging Bruesa GBC 80-87 on the road on Saturday behind 16 points from Jimmie Hunter while Unicaja dropped to 15-14 due to a 81-83 overtime road loss against ViveMenorca. DKV Joventut is now fourth at 19-10 by downing Polaris World CB Murcia 83-72 in Badalona on Sunday. Charles Gaines led Joventut with 20 points and 10 rebounds. In other games, Grupo Capitol Valladolid bested Caja San Fernando 97-83 at home on Saturday behind 21 points and 10 assists from Joseph Gomis.

Fresh from winning its first ULEB Cup title, Real Madrid improved to 22-7 and keeps tying atop the Spanish League standings by downing Pamesa Valencia 78-66 at home on Saturday. Bullock led the winners with 23 points. Alex Mumbru added 13 while Charles Smith had 12 for Real Madrid. It was a balanced game for 34 minutes, as Pamesa got within 64-58 midway through the final period. Bullock stroke twice from downtown in a 14-3 run that Smith capped with a fast break dunk, enough to boost Madrid's margin to 78-61 and seal the outcome. Tau Ceramica also improved to 22-7 by beating Etosa Alicante 66-73 on the road on Sunday. Splitter paced the winners with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Pablo Prigioni added 14 points, Zoran Planinic had 11 while Luis Scola and Fred House each bagged 10 for Tau, that trailed 42-41 midway through the third quarter. A 0-12 run that Scola capped with a basket put Tau ahead for good, 42-53, as Etosa never managed to get back into the game. Winterthur FCB is now third at 20-9 by edging Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 66-75 on the road also on Sunday. Navarro led the winners with 20 points, Grimau added 14, Fran Vazquez had 12 and Jaka Lakovic 11 for Barcelona. Both teams were tied at 61-61, but Navarro buried a triple and Grimau dunked it to give Barcelona the go-ahead lead. Another triple by Navarro sealed the outcome, 66-73, with a minute to go.

Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas stayed sixth at 17-12 by edging Bruesa GBC 80-87 on the road on Saturday. Hunter led the winners with 16 points, Sitapha Savane added 14, Marcus Norris had 11 while Kornel David and Roberto Guerra each bagged 10 for Gran Canaria, that trailed 34-33 at halftime. Free throws by Savane gave Gran Canaria a 50-55 edge entering the fourth quarter, while Mario Fernandez boosted the guests' margin to 61-71 with 4 minutes to go. Bruesa was not done, however, and got within 80-82 with 41 seconds remaining. Free throws by David, Norris and Fernandez helped Gran Canaria to put the win on ice. Unicaja dropped to 15-14 due to a 81-83 overtime road loss against ViveMenorca. Chris Moss paced the winners with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Marcus Brown had 16 points for Unicaja, Berni Rodriguez 13, Jiri Welsch 12 and Carlos Cabezas 10. A three-point play by Rodriguez allowed Unicaja to force overtime, 72-72, but ViveMenorca escaped with a key road win. DKV Joventut improved to 19-10 by thrashing Polaris World CB Murcia 83-72 in Badalona on Sunday. Charles Gaines led the winners with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Rudy Fernandez added 19 points while Lubos Barton and Robert Archibald each had 10 for Joventut. Gaines had 10 points in the first quarter to make Joventut get a 22-14 lead after 10 minutes. Three-pointers by Fernandez, Barton and Ricky Rubio allowed the hosts to extend their margin to 51-38 at halftime. Murcia never recovered and Joventut kept a double-digit lead all the way in the second half.
